The terno goes haute couture. Was Lola Karl inspired by Imelda Marcos?
For fall, Lagerfeld gave the couture plenty to swoon over, presenting as he did a spectacular collection that, coupled with the unbearable heat beneath the venue’s greenhouse-effect glass dome, had just about everyone longing for the chill air of fall. What better way to stay cozy than in glorious Chanel tweed, now oh-so-new in salt-and-pepper car coats over charming tunic-and-skirt combos? Flamboyant types can opt for feathered extras or chinchilla hem. Or they might forgo the tweeds all together in favor of a structured dress with geometric power sleeves, a motif that carried into evening in steely grays with precision jeweling and a pair of gorgeous linear, covered-up black gowns that made sensual stuff out of discretion. But, then, there is nothing discreet about Lagerfeld’s genius for elevating comfort clothes to the realm of glorious fashion. Chez Chanel, for a woman to look ultrachic isn’t enough. A frock isn’t fabulous unless it makes her feel fabulous. That’s the ultimate fashion statement, and what this collection is all about.
Here's what WWD had to say about the collection:
All the models sashayed down the runway in the same hairstyle. Very Bessie Badilla circa early 1980s. Was he inspired by her as well?
You have to admit, he's turned the terno from stiff to sensuous. The ruching, the draping, and the sheen of the petroleum silk fabric... he's definitely luxed it up.
I don't quite see Imelda wearing it though...

I love this number Bambs! If I had to wear a terno, I'd like it to look like this.

Me too, Maddie! I like! Why did no one ever think of that before? I have one from the mid-90s that I wore for a function, in black silk chiffon. I think the silk charmeuse fabric really makes a difference!
